Konkurranseånd 2 (transl. Competitive Spirit) was hosted with Urban Lab and with a biger supervising crew, Nora Ulrikke Andersen and Saddaf Parwany. This session serves as a precursor to SITRAP’s national student competition, Selfie Tourism, with a deadline in two weeks time, and differs completely from the last “roleplay” workshop - which was smaller in scope, theme, attendance and duration. The aim of this workshop is to establish 9 teams across acquaintances, fields and time spent studying, and push the ideation of concepts to the limit. Even though there were no winners in this session, the supervising team gave a temporary ranking of who they think was ahead of the others.

The program consisted of one preliminary lecture, two production bulks (with supervision), one public presentations, and the rankings at the end. There were ample social activities in-between with banquettes, dinners, beers etc.:

THREE THEMES

The competition brief states three important themes:

  1. Nature, cultural landscapes, historical sites, attractions. This theme attracted 3 teams, showcasing surprising directions: UU (universal accessibility) tourist roads, local wisdom app, amateur tourism.

  2. Local communities, municipal economy, planning. This theme attracted the majority of 4 teams, focusing on strategical aspects and target groups: package deals for Odda and Geiranger, infrastructure scheme for Lofoten, and GEN Z.

  3. Selfie tourism, as phenomenon. This theme attracted the minority of 2 teams, and attempted to resolve the elusive aspects of social media: Strava/local guides and how to influence follower bases.

The 9 teams and their thematic choices boiled down to these:

TEMPORARY RANKING

This workshop also speculated how to future jury would deal with all the submitted contributions. One idea, was that the jury most likely has to promote atleast one contribution from each theme, and also put forth some runner-ups. In competitive fashion, we nominated 3 teams in each respective theme + 1 runner-up:

  1. Place: TEAM 5/Local Wisdom - search prompt based on local experiences. Mock-up app.

  2. Place: TEAM 8/Foreign Amateur Tourism - dangers surrounding wildlife, waste, behaviour, and discourses. Chronicle.

  3. Place: TEAM 7/GEN Z - Nature-based volunteering with hostels, work on the farm, selling berries etc. Boards.

  4. Special Mention: TEAM 4/Nature-wise - influence the influencer, influence the follower-base.

INFO

SITRAP (Centre for integrated and transdisciplinary teaching in planning) is the main host of the competition, and wants to inspire interdisciplinary collaboration and networking across study programs and campuses. The goal is to learn more about how students acquire and develop collaboration skills. Hence, their annual student competition, focused on urban development.

Urban Lab is a student-driven initiative at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). It serves as a platform for testing ideas within urban and rural development, where students can engage with both academia and the business sector.

The entries are evaluated by a jury based on set criteria, and the winners are announced at the SITRAP annual conference at the end of October. The prize pool is 100,000 NOK, with the top entry receiving at least 30,000 NOK.
