LAA350 - Midterm Seminar
The students are to present their project as-it-is at this point in time. There are some criteria for this session: overarching idea, analysis of the place, and their spatial guidelines - these are the things that the teachers Anja, Tin and Mads has been drilling the students on through lectures, workshops and pop-quiz. The sum of this should culminate in a design proposal. Especially, Tin stood out with his pastry skills baking lemonies (the lemon-version of brownies) and serving 4l of ice cream. This coincided right before the midterm review of the teachers’ performance.
The mandatory bullet points:
context/problem.
concept proposal.
planning approach.
density/massing.
Some tidbits of the students’ presentations:
Tin’s pastry skills and midterm performance review.
The midterm review is to give the teachers insight into how to improve for the remaining months of the course. The students wrote this about Tin on his teaching abilities:
“It's enjoyable when Tin is involved as a lecturer. He always starts with something funny that sets the tone for the rest of the session. This encourages people to show up and stay engaged throughout.”
“I find that the lectures and workshops extremely useful for the work, particularly several of those led by Tin, where we must actually sit down as a group and define the problem, concept, etc. This process enables us to make the necessary decisions so that we can move forward. It is very beneficial.”
“Anja states that something is important, and Tin also asserts that something else is important. This creates difficulty in determining what to focus on and prioritize in the assignment.”
There were no mention of Tin’s cakes, whatsoever. One must not forget how Tin slaved over the stove the entire day before, which could have fed an audience of 150+ mouths. The baking process was well-documented in the lecture, RFP he held the day after.
The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Askim. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year. The teaching staff consist of Anja Standal, the new course responsible (BYREG), Mads Juel Engh (LA), and Tin Phan (EIEJUSS).
